BOULDER CITY, NV – OCTOBER 18, 2016 – In what they envision will soon become a new Standard of Care in the clinical forensic medicine field, SDFI®-TeleMedicine, has released the “Non-Fatal Strangulation Protocol 2017”, which is available for download on SDFI’s website at: http://www.sdfi.com/downloads/SDFI_Non-Fatal_Strangulation_Protocol.pdf.
The Protocol was produced by forensic nurse veteran, Diana Faugno - MSN, RN, CPN, SANE-A, SANE-P, FAAFS, DF-IAFN. Diana, who was recently the recipient of the 2016 Virginia A. Lynch Pioneer in Forensic Nursing Award – the highest award given by the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN), says that before the Non-Fatal Strangulation Protocol, “There was no official guideline to guide the examiner on the correct pictures to take. Many organizations would just take pictures or would have established a list of the type of pictures they would take – it would be their own procedure – nothing nationally.”
Faugno further explains, “This protocol was written, based on the typically visible findings in patients who had been strangled. I wanted there to be an organized how-to guide for everyone…many nurses have not had specific training on strangulation, and it is important they would have this (protocol) to guide them. The Strangulation Institute has this now and will instruct its students in it.”
Before publication, the protocol received a thorough review and thumb’s up by Bill Smock, MD, Police Surgeon – Louisville Metro Police Department, Medical Director – The Institute of Clinical Forensic Medicine and Nursing. SDFI®-TeleMedicine also reviewed the protocol, which features a model, rather than a patient in its photos. SDFI®-TeleMedicine, which was founded in 2001, provides forensic photodocumentation products, education, services and support to medical and legal professionals who assist with the reduction and elimination of physical violence throughout the world. Their Standard SDFI Camera System allows examiners and investigators to capture high-resolution, court-ready .RAW and .JPG pictures and mp4 videos in the visible light spectrum. Once images and video are captured, the System’s Image Management Software allows users to encrypt their files, using AES 256-bit encryption, while storing the files on their own computers or networks. When ready, users can then utilize the SDFI File Portal to securely send their files electronically to anyone in the world. Recipients do not even need SDFI’s software to access the sent files and videos.
The Contrast SDFI Camera System which recently debuted in April, 2015, works in tandem with its included ultraviolet contrast light, and also allows examiners and investigators to capture high-resolution, court- ready .RAW and .JPG images and mp4 video of substances such as sperm, semen and urine in the ultraviolet light spectrum. Once images and video are captured, this option works the same way as the Standard SDFI Camera System’s, encrypting, storing and sending capabilities.
Standard and Contrast “Add-Ons” – further SDFI product options - allow current SDFI clients to build their own SDFI System environments. SDFI’s Image Management Software – which is included with every SDFI Camera System– allows users to view their photos with SDFI Forensic Software tools like the SDFI Negative Invert Filter. When utilized, this filter helps to see subtle details in an image that would otherwise be missed. The software’s Loupe Tool, enables the System user to see an area of interest at one-hundred percent, allowing for incredible detailed viewing.
